A PRACTICE YOU CAN START FROM
Ready target, clean gather, clear first-base route
A 45-minute softball practice for six players ages 8–12. Throwing and grounders lead into supervised tee work and a separate first-base walk-through.

- Time
- 45 minutes
- Group
- 6 players
- Equipment
- 3 soft age-appropriate practice softballs; 1 glove per player; 1 suitable lightweight bat and 1 batting tee; 1 soft reduced-flight batting ball; 1 correctly fitted batting helmet per player; 8 cones
Set up: Give each pair a separate short throwing and rolling lane. Reserve a clear hitting lane at least 20 metres long and a waiting area behind the batter. Reuse cones for the first-base walk-through only after the bat and balls are parked.
Make a plan for your team- 0–5minutes
Progressive walking warm-up
Use an easy walking route and gradually increase pace while comfortable. Name the session’s focus: show a target, secure the ball and know the next step.
- 5–13minutes
Softball partner catch: overhand throwing
Pairs start close in separate lanes. Show the glove target, confirm readiness and exchange gentle chest-height throws. Adjust the gap after four controlled exchanges.
Try this cue: “See the target before you send.”
- 13–21minutes
Softball grounders: adjustment steps
Roll a soft ball within one comfortable step of the fielder. Adjust with small steps, gather in front and pause before rolling back. Swap after five turns.
Try this cue: “Feet first, then gather.”
- 21–24minutes
Water and tee setup
Offer water, clear all throwing lanes and place every waiting player behind the batting exclusion line. Check helmets and the empty hitting area.
- 24–34minutes
Softball tee work: ball tracking
One helmeted batter identifies the ball on the tee, takes the bat from the coach and makes a small controlled swing. Pause the finish, park the bat and describe where the ball went. Retrieve only on the all-clear.
Try this cue: “See it, swing, stop and look.”
- 34–40minutes
Softball first-base running lane
With no live ball or bat, mark separate runner and fielder sides. Walk straight through the agreed running side while an observer remains clear. Stop and check the paths before rotating.
- 40–45minutes
Cool-down walk and check-in
Walk at an easy pace and ask players to explain one sign that a partner was ready to receive. Confirm the next practice details.
Make it easier
Use a shorter toss and straight ground-ball rolls. Tap the tee ball with a short swing. Walk the first-base route together without a fielder-side observer.
Add a challenge
Vary grounders slightly left and right while keeping them reachable. Ask the batter to describe the starting ball position and the finish. For older players, add catalog activities about relay targets and fielding decisions.
Confirm your league’s first-base and double-base rules before teaching game situations. The hitting block has one supervised helmeted batter; this sample contains no live pitching, sliding or collision plays.

Choose the moment to improve
Describe what breaks down: a hurried transfer, a missed target or confusion at first base. Start with a practice focus players can recognize and explain.
- 02
Build a manageable sequence
Use short partner exchanges before adding a fielding choice. Check the softball, glove and helmet requirements for the drills you select, and leave time to change layouts between batting and running.

Make the next practice easier to prepare
Save useful drills as favorites, keep the session with your team and edit it when you revisit the focus. Attach the plan to a calendar practice and share the details families need.

Softball coaching questions
More on accounts, sharing and subscriptions in the Coach Help Center.
Does Coach have softball drills rather than just renamed baseball drills?
Yes. Softball has its own catalog entries covering exchanges, ground-ball footwork, tee routines, first-base paths, relay choices and infield communication. Each entry has its own instructions and equipment list. Some foundational movements are shared across the two sports.
How do I organize a softball practice with one coach?
Start with activities where the whole group stays in view, then run batting as a supervised group activity with one active batter. The sample on this page is sequential. Do not add simultaneous batting and fielding stations unless their layout and supervision are suitable.
Can I make plans for younger players and a high school team?
Yes. Coach supports multiple teams and age selections, including custom ranges. The softball library has younger-player activities and options for ages 13 through adults. Make separate plans when the tasks or skill levels differ; review every copied plan for its new team.
Can I include a practice reminder for parents?
Yes. Draft Messages helps you prepare a parent or team message from the details you have. You can leave optional details out, edit the AI draft and copy or share it. Coach does not automatically send that draft to your team.
How do I save a softball drill for later?
Use Save drill in the library to add it to your favorites. You can find it again while building a plan, read the full instructions and use it for another team. A saved favorite is not a record that players completed the activity.
