A PRACTICE YOU CAN START FROM
Catch, gather and finish balanced
A 45-minute baseball practice for six players ages 8–12. Pair work gives everyone repetitions; the whole group then takes supervised turns at one tee.

- Baseball
- Time
- 45 minutes
- Group
- 6 players
- Equipment
- 3 soft age-appropriate practice baseballs; 1 glove per player; 1 suitable lightweight bat and 1 batting tee; 1 soft reduced-flight batting ball; 1 correctly fitted batting helmet per player; 8 cones
Set up: Mark three separated throwing and rolling lanes. For tee work, use an empty hitting lane at least 20 metres long with a marked waiting area behind the batter. Run the activities sequentially so one coach can supervise the whole group.
Make a plan for your team- 0–5minutes
Progressive walking warm-up
Walk a clear route, gradually increasing pace while comfortable. Show the stop signal and explain that no one retrieves a loose ball until the coach gives the all-clear.
- 5–13minutes
Partner catch: overhand throwing
Partners use comfortable short throwing distances. The receiver shows a target and says ready; throw gently, secure the catch and reset before returning.
Try this cue: “A ready target before every throw.”
- 13–21minutes
Ground-ball fielding: funnel and return
In separate eight-metre lanes, slowly roll to a partner who moves behind the ball and gathers in front. Secure it before rolling back; swap after five feeds.
Try this cue: “Gather first. Then decide what comes next.”
- 21–24minutes
Water and batting setup
Park all throwing balls, offer water and bring everyone behind the batting exclusion line. Check each batter’s helmet and demonstrate how the bat is handed back.
- 24–34minutes
Tee work: balanced finish
One helmeted player takes a small controlled swing at the soft tee ball and pauses in a comfortable finish. Hand the bat to the coach before retrieval. Rotate after a turn while waiting players observe balance.
Try this cue: “Swing, settle, hand back the bat.”
- 34–40minutes
Base-order walk-through
With all batting equipment parked, walk a small cone diamond at wide gaps. Name each base, point to the next and let another player call the order on the second round.
- 40–45minutes
Cool-down walk and check-in
Walk easily and ask each player for one cue that helped a catch, gather or balanced finish. Confirm the next meeting details.
Make it easier
Use a closer underhand toss and straight slow ground balls. Keep tee swings short. Younger players can work on glove presentation and base recognition before adding the full sequence.
Add a challenge
Add a small sideways roll once gathers are controlled. Have an observer describe the batter’s balance. For older players, choose the catalog’s relay, target-selection and force-play walk-throughs.
Only one helmeted batter swings, with everyone else behind the exclusion line. This sample has no live pitching, catcher blocking, sliding or pitching-workload prescription. Additional hitting stations need their own suitable space and supervision.

Baseball coaching questions
More on accounts, sharing and subscriptions in the Coach Help Center.
What should a youth baseball practice include?
Choose a small number of related tasks rather than trying to cover everything. The example combines ready-target throwing, ground-ball gathering, a supervised tee turn and base order. Adjust the mix to what your players can demonstrate and the equipment and coaching help available.
Can Coach make a baseball station plan?
Coach can help organize drills and timings into a plan. Check the supervision and spacing for each station, especially batting. With one coach, running activities in sequence may be more practical than spreading players across simultaneous throwing and hitting areas.
Are there activities for tee-ball-age beginners?
The baseball library includes activities beginning at age six, such as self-roll fielding, glove presentation, base-order walks and supervised tee routines. Select the child’s actual age and match the task to readiness; the sample above is written for ages 8–12.
Does Coach prescribe pitching workloads?
No. The library and this sample do not provide pitching workload prescriptions or a return-to-play program. Use your league’s applicable rules and qualified guidance for those decisions. Coach can help organize the ordinary practice activities you choose.
Can I reuse last week’s baseball practice?
Yes. Open a saved plan, change its timings or drills and save it for your team. You can copy a plan to another team and adjust the copy, or share a PDF so an assistant has the same instructions.
