A PRACTICE YOU CAN START FROM
Volleyball: turn a difficult first pass into a playable ball
A 45-minute volleyball practice for six players ages 14–18. Focus on an early call, a useful second contact and one receiving adjustment you can observe.
- Sport
- Volleyball
- Time
- 45 minutes
- Group
- 6 players
- Equipment
- 1 appropriate practice volleyball; 1 secured volleyball net; A marked volleyball court with clear run-off; A clear off-net area for a three-player contact task
Set up: Begin with one active off-net trio and rotate the remaining players into roles after two attempts. Move to one server and two receivers on court, then 3v3. Waiting players stay outside the run-off area and observe the session’s one cue.
Make a plan for your team- 0–6minutes
Progressive walking warm-up
Use a gradually increasing comfortable walking pace. Explain the one behavior to watch: naming a useful second-contact option before the ball becomes difficult.
- 6–15minutes
Out-of-system pass-set-catch
A feeder tosses slightly away from the first passer’s center. The second-contact player moves early, calls if help is needed and sends a high catchable ball toward the feeder. Rotate after two attempts.
Try this cue: “Make it playable before making it perfect.”
- 15–18minutes
Water and receiving setup
Offer water and choose a reachable serving position. Receivers show the broad area they will leave open before the next serve.
- 18–27minutes
Serve placement against two receivers
One server identifies the broad open area and uses a controlled serve. Two receivers pass and catch, then compare the intended target with where the ball landed. Rotate the server after three attempts.
Try this cue: “State the target; check the result.”
- 27–39minutes
Serve-receive adjustment game
Play 3v3 for three controlled rallies. The receiving side chooses one adjustment, such as an earlier call, then repeats. Stop briefly to compare that behavior before switching serving roles.
Try this cue: “One adjustment we can actually see.”
- 39–45minutes
Cool-down walk and check-in
Walk easily and have players describe whether their chosen adjustment appeared. Add that observation to the next planning conversation without treating it as a measured performance score.
Make it easier
Let the second-contact player catch before sending. Use a gentle two-hand throw for the serving read and begin every rally with an easy free ball.
Add a challenge
Vary the first pass within two comfortable steps, change the receiving shape before the server’s ready signal and alternate broad serve targets while keeping control.
This is a practice-organization example, not a complete high school training program. Coach does not replace sport-specific staff judgment, film analysis, certified strength programming or school requirements.

YOUR TEAM. YOUR DECISIONS.
Turn an idea into
your next practice.
Set your team’s ages, headcount and goal, then review and adjust the plan with Coach.
- 01
Define a behavior you can observe
Replace a broad goal like ‘better teamwork’ with something players can show, such as naming the second-contact target early. Use that as the thread through the whole session.
- 02
Make the staff brief usable
Write down the active group, each role, the rotation point and one coaching cue. Edit the generated plan to fit your system and check that simultaneous stations have the right staff and space.
- 03
Keep teams and sessions connected
Select same-sport teams for a suitable joint practice or create independent copies. Pin plans to calendar weeks, then use the saved session dates to make later questions in Agent Chat more specific.

High school sports coaching questions
More on accounts, sharing and subscriptions in the Coach Help Center.
Is Coach useful for high school teams or only younger children?
The library includes activities for ages 13 through adults as well as younger-player drills. High school coaches can use it for session organization, fundamental practice tasks, calendar planning and shareable instructions. Judge whether each activity fits your team’s level and your coaching system.
Can I plan for varsity and junior varsity together?
You can select multiple same-sport teams for a joint plan, or create separate plans and adapt a copy. Check the combined ages, player count, equipment and supervision. A shared team selection does not guarantee that every drill fits the combined group.
Can Coach write an assistant-coach brief?
Yes. Ask for a clear session outline and edit the roles, timing and coaching cues in the resulting document. Share the plan as a link or PDF. Verify the final assignments so everyone knows who is supervising each activity.
Does Coach analyze game film or provide an advanced tactical system?
No game-film analysis or scouting system is included. Agent Chat can discuss the priorities and observations you provide and use selected saved team records. Treat its response as planning assistance and review sport-specific decisions yourself.
Can Agent Chat tell me what we planned during the season?
It can refer to saved practices, drill records and calendar dates for the selected teams. Use a specific team and date range for a clearer answer. Context is bounded, and planned activities are distinct from practices marked complete; confirm important details in the original documents.
