A PRACTICE YOU CAN START FROM
Find the open teammate — no hoop needed
A 45-minute basketball practice for eight players ages 9–12. Begin with ball control and progress from a stationary partner to moving passing options.
- Sport
- Basketball
- Time
- 45 minutes
- Group
- 8 players
- Equipment
- 8 appropriately sized basketballs; 16 flat markers, or equivalent visible existing spots; 8 cones for the end-zone game; Optional team bibs
Set up: Use a dry, clear court area. The handling task needs a 12 × 12-metre area with clear edges; pair tasks need separated lanes. Mark a 16 × 10-metre game area with two-metre end zones and run-off space.
Make a plan for your team- 0–5minutes
Progressive walking warm-up
Walk the activity boundary at a comfortable, gradually increasing pace. Show the stop signal and where spare balls will be kept.
- 5–11minutes
Dribble and stop in space
Give each player a ball and a marked bay. Dribble at walking pace into the middle, then find an empty bay and gather the ball. Nobody races for the same space.
Try this cue: “Slow down before you gather.”
- 11–18minutes
Partner chest passing
Partners begin 2–3 metres apart. Show ready hands, deliver a gentle chest pass and settle before returning. After four turns each, agree whether the gap should change.
Try this cue: “Ready hands, then the pass.”
- 18–20minutes
Water and setup change
Offer water, park spare balls and show the receiver’s walking lane for the next task.
- 20–28minutes
Passing to a moving receiver
One player walks along a three-metre receiver lane while the partner passes from in front. Pass into comfortable reach near the middle, stop and return. Swap after four attempts.
Try this cue: “Find the receiver’s hands in space.”
- 28–40minutes
End-zone passing game
Play 4v4 at walking pace. The ball holder stops; teammates move to offer a pass. Score with an uncontested catch in the target end zone. Defenders give an arm’s length and only intercept passes.
Try this cue: “Move to a space your teammate can see.”
- 40–45minutes
Cool-down walk and check-in
Walk easily and ask which passing target was easiest to find. Use that answer when choosing the next practice focus.
Make it easier
Let players carry the ball to a bay before making three bounces. Shorten passing distances and remove defenders from the end-zone game until everyone finds a passing option.
Add a challenge
Try the less comfortable hand at walking pace. Let moving receivers choose their direction, then ask the game’s receivers to avoid sharing the same end-zone space.
The end-zone activity is a teaching game with no dribbling, contested catches or close marking. For a shooting session, choose hoop-based drills and check the number of active players and reachable baskets.

Name the next improvement
Tell Agent Chat what you noticed: rushed passes, players standing still or difficulty controlling the dribble. Choose a team and turn that observation into a practice focus.
- 02
Use the whole group
Choose personal ball work, pair passing or a small-sided task. Check ball and hoop counts before adding a drill; use the easier variation when players are still learning the movement.

Save what you want to repeat
Favorite useful drills and keep the completed plan with your team’s documents. Change the order, add an exercise or share a PDF so an assistant can follow the same session.

Basketball coaching questions
More on accounts, sharing and subscriptions in the Coach Help Center.
Can Coach help me build a basketball practice without a hoop?
Yes. The library includes ball handling, passing, pivoting and movement activities that do not need a basket. The example on this page is a complete no-hoop session. Shooting and finishing drills still require suitable hoops and clear collection paths.
Are there basketball drills for beginners and teenagers?
Yes. The library includes younger-player activities and drills that cover teenagers and adults. Use age alongside demonstrated skill: an older beginner may need a simple progression, while a younger experienced player may be ready for a more demanding decision.
How can I avoid players waiting in long shooting lines?
Check how many players each drill keeps active. For limited baskets, alternate a small shooting group with a separately supervised passing or handling activity, or choose a no-hoop focus for the whole session. Coach can organize the plan; you still decide whether the space and supervision support simultaneous stations.
Can I ask Coach what we worked on last week?
Agent Chat can use saved practices, drill records and calendar dates for the teams you select. Ask for a specific week or practice date. Its context is limited, so an omitted record is not proof that an activity never happened; open your saved plan to confirm details.
Can I change a generated basketball plan before sharing it?
Yes. Edit the wording and timings, add or remove drills and save the updated plan. You can share a link or download PDF and Excel versions. Review the final instructions and equipment before giving the plan to players.
