Choose a reachable target

Use self contacts to prepare for the partner pass. Keep the receiving target close and stable before asking a partner to move it.

Make every reset useful

When a ball gets away, reset the stance and feed. Avoid turning repeated chasing into the main activity; reduce height or distance instead.

  1. 03minutes

    Warm-up

Walk around a clear area, gradually picking up the pace. Introduce today’s focus and show the first activity.

  2. 311minutes

    Self forearm pass and catch

Create a repeatable forearm platform with a soft self-feed. Use 1 group of 8 players. Equipment below is needed for each group.

    How to run it

Each player has a light volleyball and room for one step in every direction. Repeat the layout in separate personal or pair areas with full movement clearance.

    1. Self-toss just above head height.
    2. Join the forearms and send the ball a short distance upward.
    3. Separate the hands and catch, then reset before another try.
    4. Compare five attempts and keep the most controllable height.

Equipment: 1 appropriate practice ball per player

Keep it safe: Use a light, age-appropriate volleyball and controlled contacts; no diving, body contact or maximum jumps. Check dry footing and overhead clearance; stop every group when a stray ball enters its space. Match challenge to demonstrated skill and comfort, not age alone. Offer rest and shorter turns; the age range does not establish fitness or readiness.

  3. 1118minutes

    Self setting: low and high

Compare how much push produces a controllable low or higher set. Use 1 group of 8 players. Equipment below is needed for each group.

    How to run it

Each player holds a light volleyball in a clear personal area. Repeat the layout in separate personal or pair areas with full movement clearance.

    1. Self-toss and use one gentle overhead set, then catch.
    2. Try a low set that travels just above the hands.
    3. Try a slightly higher set without leaning backward.
    4. Alternate the two heights and explain the change in effort.

    Water break

Offer water and reset the activity areas.

  5. 1927minutes

Partner forearm passing to a moving target

Direct a forearm pass toward a partner who changes the target position. Use 1 group of 8 players. Equipment below is needed for each group.

    How to run it

Pairs begin 3–4 metres apart with one ball; the receiver stays inside a comfortable one-step area. For an odd headcount, use one trio: the third player observes one cue and swaps in after each short turn.

    1. Partner gently tosses to the passer and presents a target at chest height.
    2. Passer moves their feet, sends one controlled forearm pass and returns to ready position.
    3. After three catches, the target takes one small step to either side before the next toss.
    4. Swap roles after six attempts and discuss the easiest contact point.

Equipment: 1 appropriate practice ball per pair

Keep it safe: Check net anchors, overhead clearance and dry footing; stop the whole group for loose balls. No diving, blocking contact or maximum-effort jumping in these introductory activities. Match the challenge to demonstrated skill and comfort, not age alone. Offer shorter turns and rest; the listed age range does not establish fitness or readiness.

  6. 2730minutes

    Cool-down and check-in

Walk at an easy pace, offer water, and ask players to name one thing they want to try again next time.

Questions coaches ask

Can I run this in half a gym?

Check the actual space required by each group and separate it from other users. A smaller area may require fewer active pairs or a different setup.

Is serving included?

This example focuses on passing and setting control. Choose a serving-focused practice when that is the goal.

Can I save and change this practice in Coach?

Coach lets you create, save and edit practice plans, change drills and timings, and share a plan by link or download. The free generator offers starter plans without an account; saved team plans and AI chat are part of the paid workspace.
